As we anticipate the cooler weather in Dublin, we find comfort in the return of our beloved cashmere season at Theo + George. While the nostalgia of summer lingers, there's an undeniable satisfaction in wrapping ourselves in the cozy luxury of autumn's staple—cashmere.
With the changing seasons, we often notice an uptick in inquiries from our valued customers seeking advice on the best care practices for their cashmere garments. In light of this, we're revisiting some practical tips to ensure the longevity of your wardrobe essentials over the coming months.
How to wash your cashmere
If you feel your cashmere needs a more intense wash! (i.e you’ve food on your cashmere)
Note: Just make sure your machine doesn’t have an agitator. Use front-loaded washing machines only!
Comb Your Cashmere: Tackling Pilling with Ease
After the initial wears of your cozy cashmere sweater, you may notice the appearance of small, fuzzy balls on the fabric's surface—this is known as pilling. Fear not, as this is a completely normal and expected phenomenon with cashmere.
Why does pilling occur? Pilling happens when loose fibres on the surface of the fabric intertwine and form tiny balls. This is a natural part of the wearing process, especially with softer and more delicate materials like cashmere.
How to address pilling:
Gentle combing: Invest in a fabric comb or a cashmere comb specifically designed for this purpose. Gently run the comb over the pilled areas, using short strokes to lift and remove the fuzz. I personally love the cashmere shaver by Steamery.
Light pressure: Ensure you use light pressure while combing to avoid damaging the fabric. The goal is to delicately lift the loose fibers without causing stress to the underlying material.
Regular maintenance: Make combing your cashmere a part of your regular garment care routine. By addressing pilling early, you can keep your sweater looking fresh and well-maintained.
Preventive measures:
Wash with care: Follow the recommended washing instructions for cashmere, using a gentle detergent. This helps minimise the occurrence of loose fibres.
Avoid friction: Be mindful of abrasive surfaces, as excessive rubbing against rough textures can contribute to pilling.
Storage matters: Store your cashmere items folded rather than hanging to minimise friction and potential pilling.
Don’ts for cashmere
Dry cleaning isn’t always better: Since researching online and from previous experience, I have found that dry cleaning can be more hard on cashmere fibres due to dry cleaners using harsh chemicals. This will, in turn, wear down the fibres of your cashmere. (Plus you're saving a money!)
Be careful: Never hang your cashmere it will only lose it’s shape and begin to stretch over time. *If you have a thick cashmere jumper you can hang it on padded hangers. Just remember ever so often to readjust the jumper so it doesn’t stay in the same shape on the hanger.
Resting your cashmere: Don’t overwear your cashmere. You must let your cashmere sit between days of wearing. On days of rest, the fibres have time to shape back into original position. Making your cashmere last longer.
Do’s for cashmere
Always fold: Fold your sweater placing arms tucked behind. To avoid lines running in your cashmere jumper.
Storage Matters: Place your cashmere in a ziplock bag and store in a plastic box. When storing your cashmere put no more than 3-4 pieces on top of your cashmere. Any more garments will be too heavy thus losing shape.
Keep cashmere clean: Before storing your cashmere away for the summer (Irish people this doesn’t relate to you) remember to always have clean cashmere. This prevents the attraction of moths. If you do have a moth problem. The best way to get rid of them is to wrap the clothing in a plastic bag and place it overnight in a freezer. Let it thaw on a towel the next day.
Tip: To keep your cashmere smelling fresh place cedar chips in your storage box.

]]>At Theo + George sustainability is one of our core values. This means that we do your homework for you and produce our garments in the most ethical and sustainable way we can. But we know many of you want to do more, so we have created a small guide with 5 simple ways to be more sustainable in your everyday life.
Small businesses bring so much to our communities, they are more sustainable than larger big box options because they support other local suppliers and cut carbon emissions and air pollution by reducing transportation. Plus, they are crucial for local towns as they create jobs and ensure the circulation of money back into the economy. Many of these shops also donate, support the local schools and charities, and build a sense of community in a town.
Our favourite local Dublin businesses:
You can also shop from some of the brands online!
We all have things we no longer need and often do not know how to dispose of. Well, a great way to declutter your home is to donate these unwanted items! Many charities and second-hand shops take donations. Not only can you easily get rid of items that way, but it is also for a great cause! Most importantly you can donate many different things: clothes, books, furniture etc.
Some charity shops that take donations in Dublin:
*A great way to dispose of clothes, is to use Depop, a platform where you can sell and buy clothes. Check out our Depop for some final sale items.
One basic rule of sustainability is to choose quality over quantity! It is much better to wait and buy something of better quality, that will last longer. It is also important to take into consideration the ethos of the company and how its clothes are manufactured.
Caring properly for clothes is a step many of us skip. It is essential, however, to take good care of our clothes so they last longer and so we do not need to replace them as often. We all hate that feeling of having to get rid of that sweater that we love wearing so much!
This is a very simple step to be more sustainable without much effort. Carrying a reusable coffee cup and bottle decreases plastic use very quickly. It also has the advantage of knowing what materials we use and therefore not consuming any toxins. Most of us already have these items at home but if you don’t, Edamame is a small Irish brand that has a great selection of sustainable food and beverage containers.
All that being said, we know that life can often get in the way, making sustainability less of a priority. Sustainability is about making small efforts whenever possible! ]]>With summer rolling in and the sun shining we are all missing our cocktail hour and time with friends. As social distancing measures ease a bit and we can have small outdoor gatherings with 4 people it’s the perfect time for us to get creative with making our own cocktails. Many of us are also avoiding going to the grocery store frequently, making it hard to keep fresh fruit and herbs ready for those drinks. A great tip we received was to freeze a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice in an ice cube tray for the perfect citrusy splash for any drink. We decided to share some of our favourite recipes below.

I'm sure you've heard repeatedly over the last couple weeks how important keeping a routine or schedule is while we're social distancing. But, the one thing we noticed that no one is talking about how important it is to start off the day with a well balanced breakfast. Starting your day off with a healthy breakfast has been proven to boost your immune system, your metabolism and your mood not to mention it improves your concentration and increases your energy levels. Plus, the Mayo Clinic reports that people who take time for breakfast get more of their daily recommended vitamins and minerals, manage their weight better, and have lower cholesterol levels.
In our house we have become obsessed with Paddy O’s an amazing Irish brand that makes delicious cereals produced in Co Laois, and we found out that we are neighbors with the brand owner Paddy - our own local celebrity! Now more than ever it’s so important to support and buy Irish brands and products. Supporting an Irish brand has never been so easy as their cereals are delicious and a healthy way to start the day. We love the granola straight from the box or with milk and fruit. But, we've had fun testing out a few recipes from their blog over the last few days.

The cold weather has officially arrived here in Dublin. However, it’s not all bad. While we do miss the summer sun here at Theo + George, we can’t deny (dare we say it …) that there is a small part of us that doesn’t mind the change in weather. Mostly because we can wrap back up in our favorite autumn/winter wardrobe staple: Cashmere.
It is often around this time that we receive a lot of inquiries from our recent and past cashmere customers, asking how to best take care of their cashmere. So as it’s cashmere season, we thought we would re-post some top tips from our previous blog on the do’s and don’ts for looking after your cashmere over the coming months.
How to wash your cashmere
If you feel your cashmere needs a more intense wash! (i.e you’ve food on your cashmere)
1.Turn your cashmere inside out and place it in a pillow with other towels to cushion the cashmere in the washing machine.
2. Tie a knot in the pillow cash to secure the clothes don’t fall out.
3. Use a very small amount of baby shampoo as a substitute for detergent.
Note: Just make sure your machine doesn’t have an agitator. Use front-loaded washing machines only!
Not sure if you can tell but we love cashmere here at Theo + George! We understand that taking care of cashmere can be a struggle but cashmere always exceeds any fashion trend and is a timeless piece that every person should have in their wardrobe.

We are quite the brunch fanatics ourselves here at Theo + George. As it's the first weekend of September, we decided to compile a list of our favourite brunch spots around Dublin.
Alma - South Circular Road
This quaint little spot, is bursting with mouth-watering flavour. Located on South Circular road and run by an Argentinian family, Alma provides a unique Argentinian twist on a modern day brunch. They serve yummy poached eggs on avo-toast, with an added kick of homemade salsa and basil dressing. For those of you with a sweeter tooth, they also plate up a very aesthetic bowl of pancakes, drizzled with glossy homemade dulce de leche sauce. Make sure to allow plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere and yummy treats.
https://www.instagram.com/alma.dublin/
Five Points - Harold’s Cross
Located in the heart of Harold’s Cross, Five Points comes with a yummy weekend brunch menu that definitely shouldn’t be overlooked. Favourites of ours include their legendary breakfast bap, consisting of fluffy scrambled eggs, caramelised onions, topped off with delicious sausages, all packed into a brioche bun. Their french toast is not to be missed, while also providing healthier options such as simple porridge topped with creamy yogurt and sweet peaches. Their counter tempts with a variety of sweet treats, perfect to accompany their hot drinks, such as Dublin’s iconic 3Fe coffee. If you don’t believe us, their Instagram speaks for itself!
https://www.instagram.com/fivepointshx/?hl=en
Two Pups - The Liberties
Tucked away in the heart of the Liberties, Two Pups serves up a unique and creative menu, as well as providing a stripped back homey interior. Their brunch menu caters for all, with a balance of both savoury and sweet options. Beware once you have found your favourite weekend dish it may go on holiday, with the menu regularly changing. Nevertheless, you are sure to be served a plate of deliciousness no matter what’s on offer! We love their various versions of french toast, as well as their sourdough toast with avocado and peanut butter spread. Strange combination I know, but it works! For those yogis out there, Two Pups is also located under Dublin’s Yoga Kitchen. So why not combine both some weekend!
https://www.instagram.com/two_pups_coffee/?hl=en
The Fumbally – Clanbrassil Street
Get the sourdough toast! I know it may sound slightly unadventurous compared to a typical brunch dish, but its accompaniments are worth it! The Fumbally’s nut butter might possibly be the tastiest concoction I have ever eaten. Think of a bright orange crunchy peanut butter with subtle hints of spice. For a sweeter spread, you are also promised a delicious homemade jam with butter. Other options include their homemade granola, tuscan beans on toast, pastries and more. Bright, open and spacious, The Fumbally is a cosy spot that highlights the best of Irish produce.

THEO + GEORGE
]]>We’d like to say we’ve been saving this list for when we could leave our bomber jacket in the closet all weekend and officially roll out our summer wardrobe but that hasn’t been the case.
And because it’s felt like March… well since March (barring the rare exception), we figured we’d go with blind denial for Summer 2019 and fingers crossed for a scorching September.
Here’s our - even if it doesn’t feel like SUMMER ESSENTIALS LIST
Swimwear
Sunscreen
Shoes
Clothes
They say summer bodies are made in winter, the same goes for wardrobes. You might be starting to feel the chill as we settle in for some more cold months ahead, but what better time to declutter, re-organise and stocktake your wardrobe than when you’re stuck indoors. Mind you, the impact that your environment can have on your mental state and wellbeing makes improving your space all the more important.

]]>What a woman carries in her handbag tells a lot about her. For the career minded jet setter, it’s laptops, notebooks and passports; for the mum, it’s soothers, nappies and snacks; the athlete, it’s a yoga mat and gym gear. But, those items don’t define the woman who is carrying the bag. So, too often, we are defined by the role we play in society and not by who we are as an individual. As our lives become more hectic we are finding less and less time for ourselves. This "me-time" is essential for our health and well-being.
We are often aware that nutrition, hydration, exercise and sleep are necessary for our own self-care. We all know how essential it is for our well-being to socialise and spend time with loved one’s and friends, but we all too often forget about the importance of "me-time." From morning commutes to lying in bed, we have those rare few minutes of daily peace.
So, why is "me-time" important??? First off, it helps to re-set the brain, it improves our concentration and makes us more productive. In addition, it enhances our relationships and gives us space for self-discovery.
So, when do we fit it in??? Can you wake up 30 minutes earlier, take your lunch break in the park, or schedule a monthly date with yourself (who doesn’t need a mani/pedi!!!)?
We asked our owner, Katie, what she does to take time for herself and here is what she had to say.
Here are her top 5 favourites:

Imagine, waking up in the morning opening your wardrobe and feeling completely relaxed - this is a thing of beauty. Designed by you, for you. This is the Capsule Closet - consciously chosen and versatile.
]]>At Theo and George we believe Capsule Collections create wardrobes for the modern woman. Where every item has a purpose, is intentionally chosen and has been crafted to the highest quality.
Imagine, waking up in the morning opening your wardrobe and feeling completely relaxed - this is a thing of beauty. Designed by you, for you. This is the Capsule Closet - consciously chosen and versatile.
Does this sound like the Dream State of some insta-fashion guru? No, it’s the future ladies. And it starts now.
How do you transform your closet into a Capsule Collection? Begin by adjusting your view of your wardrobe itself. Rather than thinking those rails and drawers as things to be filled, think of your wardrobe as something to be crafted. Impulsive purchases, throwaway items and fast fashion creates clutter and chaos. Choose your pieces wisely and aim for style harmony. Always! Quality over quantity.
Look for Seasonality. Capsule Wardrobes are versatile and cohesive. They consist of pieces that can be worn interchangeably throughout the seasons. Timeless or classic are gauge descriptions for choosing items with seasonality. Check out our Elise Military Jacket, our go-to jacket for year round layering.
Quality is Key. Quality materials, fabrics and textiles means your clothing won’t have to be constantly replaced. Yes, quality comes at a cost but that’s a good thing! When purchasing intentionally you're less likely to impulse buy. Investing in Capsule Collections save you money in the long run. Quality crafted clothing is more durable and resistant to washing and wear.
Closets that Care. A streamlined wardrobe cuts the clutter out of our closets, making space for what matters. Get rid of ill-fitting items, those pieces you think will come back in style - maybe next season? If you haven’t worn it in the last year you won’t/shouldn’t wear it now.
Give your head and your wardrobe some breathing space. If the simple act of dressing in the morning brings you joy rather than stress, we can make every day feel a little more effortless.

]]>A Who What Wear article that we came across recently reminded us of this and provided us with a much-needed breath of fresh air in an industry that’s obsessed with the next best thing. The article discussed trends the editors won’t be buying into and what to buy instead. Emma Spedding, a deputy editor at Who What Wear said, "neon looks all well and good on the catwalk, or even on Instagram, but in real life, it's notoriously difficult to pull off. Not that I've ever been tempted to try it—the ultra-bright hues would not do my skin tone any favours. Instead, I'll be sticking to dusky tones—namely pistachio."
Pistachio green gives you a pop of colour without overpowering the wearer or the outfit. Our Military Jacket in Pistachio Green is a staple in our collection and has been a constant bestseller since we launched it. Inject some colour into your Spring wardrobe with our Military Jacket - a piece that will last for many seasons to come.

As we said earlier, life with a baby is hectic. There’s no denying it. Mix the doctors’ appointments, check-ups, Christmas events and family engagements with lack of sleep and general exhaustion and it’s really easy for things to slip your mind. For us, a planner or diary is essential during this time. Writing things down makes it stick in our mind and if the diary looks pretty, that’s just an added bonus.
This one by Kate Spade is our favourite and is available online at www.myshiningarmour.com.
A clothes voucher is the perfect gift for a new mother for a number of reasons. Firstly, women’s bodies change a lot during pregnancy and many of our pre-pregnancy clothes may not suit us anymore. Secondly, this new mother has been pregnant for the last 9 months and focused on getting ready for baby to arrive, so she probably hasn’t bought any herself anything new (that’s not maternity wear) in a very long time. A Theo + George voucher is the ideal way to ensure the lady in your life treats herself to some really special items that will fit right into her wardrobe. Our vouchers can be emailed or posted in a gorgeous gift box.
Available here: www.theoandgeorge.com/
Having a baby is hard work and is insanely busy. Small things, like getting your nails done, that would have been easy before, now take hours of planning and organising. Planning something nice for the new mother in your life like a day at the spa, a voucher for dinner with friends or even a nail appointment is extremely thoughtful and is sure to go down well. Just make sure you volunteer as babysitter while she’s out!
We love getting our nails done at Fifth Avenue for ultimate pampering.
]]>To help you through this awkward period and carry you seamlessly from summer, through autumn and right into winter, we have compiled a list of what we believe are the five essential pieces you need in your transitional wardrobe.
1. A Long Sleeve Tee -
The long sleeve tee is a definite essential coming into the winter months. Wear it on its own, tucked into jeans or layer it up with a jumper and jacket to keep you toasty through the long winter.
Bonus - it has thumbholes, making it perfect for keeping your hands warm on those frosty days!
2. A Cashmere Sweater -
This should be a staple in everyone’s wardrobe, year-round, but especially coming into autumn and winter. Cashmere is incredibly soft and comfortable yet warm, and is perfect for layering. Wear it on its own for a cosy casual look or over a long sleeve tee with a great jacket over top for extra warmth.
The Ella Crew Neck Cashmere Sweater is made from ethically sourced 100% Mongolian Cashmere comes in three gorgeous shades, while the Sheridan Cashmere Turtleneck comes in two versatile colours.
3. A Bomber Jacket –
A bomber is the perfect transitional outerwear piece. Light enough to carry as a layer but warm enough to act a barrier to the cold.
The Sarah Satin Bomber is a beautiful lightweight satin with a zip detail up the back allowing the wearer to tailor the fit to them.
4. Black Jeans –
A solid pair of black jeans are vital to a transitional wardrobe, they’re one piece that never goes out of style and can be worn through every season.
5. A Black Dress –
No wardrobe is complete without a black dress. You never know when you’ll need one but choose well and you’ll wear it more than you think. When building a wardrobe to take you from summer right through to winter, the Laura Shirt Dress is the ideal candidate. It’s made from bamboo fabric which is lightweight and super soft.
We love to wear it to work buttoned all the way up with tights and ankle boots or on the weekend with the collar undone and a pair of trainers for comfort.
]]>The fashion industry, as we know it today, focuses on low costs and rapid speed to produce new collections almost every week. Every high street store sells us trendy pieces that can be paid for with the loose change in your pocket. The days of buying clothes as you outgrew them or had a real need for them are no longer.
The world now consumes about 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year. This is 400% more than the amount we consumed just two decades ago. And with this increased buying, comes increased waste. The U.S. produces more than 11 million tons of textile waste each year and in 2017, 235 million pieces of clothing were thought to have been sent to landfill in spring 2017. With the rise of fast fashion, clothing has become disposable.
The fast fashion industry also has a huge environmental and human cost. The fashion industry is one of the largest polluters of clean water, second only to the agriculture industry. The cheap, toxic chemicals used to dye fabrics as well as the microfibres that are extracted from polyester during washing are leaking into our water systems and causing huge damage.
As companies try to drive their prices lower and lower, it’s the garment workers who suffer by being forced to work in dangerous environments, for low wages and without basic human rights. A stark example, that still weighs heavily on our minds, is the Rana Plaza tragedy in Bangladesh. The factory collapse took the lives of 1,134 workers and injured a further 2,500. This was one of many factories that manufactured products for well known high street fast fashion brands.
SLOW FASHION
So, what is slow fashion? And why do we believe in it? Slow fashion is the opposite to fast fashion as described above. It advocates for principles such as good quality, clean environment, and fairness for both consumers and producers.
Here, at Theo+George, we believe in buying less and choosing well. We want to change the narrative surrounding fashion and move away from disposable clothing. In the fast fashion industry, the average wear per item is 5. If you increase this to 50 wears, your carbon footprint is reduced by 400% per item, per year.
We create high quality pieces that will stand the test of time. Our pieces are considered, timeless and made using select fabrics and textiles, so our clothes are not only beautifully designed, crafted, comfortable, but also washable, durable and built to last. We want to see you in our pieces for years to come, through seasons, trends and life.
But it really is up to you as a consumer to make the difference. It will mean spending slightly more, consuming a lot less and specifically, not buying into every trend. It’s an adjustment to what we’ve all become accustomed, but when human rights and lives are on the line, the sacrifice pales in comparison to the consequences.
OUR SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS
We make sure to use ethical manufacturers across Europe and Asia. Our denim is made in an Italian factory where it receives minimal washing and colour treatments and it’s produced and sewn into jeans by local personnel in their owned clothing factor.
Our cashmere is made in a completely vertical factory in Mongolia. The factory owners own the goats, harvest the hair, spin the fabric and manufacture the sweaters, guaranteeing us not only great quality but also the peace of mind of knowing that the goats are well taken care of – healthy goats are necessary for high quality cashmere year on year. We’re open about our manufacturing processes on our website and are always available to answer any questions.
As a small company, it’s difficult to make every aspect of our business 100% sustainable but, as we grow we hope to continue on our sustainability journey and encourage slow and ethical fashion. For the time being, we are happy to be providing high quality, stylish and classic options as an alternative for those aware of fast fashion’s consequences and to educate those who aren’t.

We love speaking with people who share the same values and beliefs as us. Who navigate the world with ease and choose a life of conscious simplicity. We had the pleasure of interviewing Stefanie Preissner who’s a big fan of our collection. Stefanie is an actress, columnist and screenwriter of the hit show Can’t Cope Won’t Cope. We hope you enjoy this interview!
Can’t Cope Won’t Cope is back on our screens on the 23rd of April. Can you tell us a little of what is to come this season?
I wrote season one of Can’t Cope Won’t Cope in 2014/15. It was a different Ireland. It’s important to me that the show feels fresh and relevant. Season 2 tackles contemporaneous issues that face Ireland in 2018 – housing crisis, women's rights, the gig economy, the urban/rural divide while also confronting the shows native themes of friendship, growing up, and the struggle to individuate from your identifying relationships.
Where did the idea come from for writing this show?
It came from me watching television and not seeing myself or how I live my life being represented accurately. I wanted to capture Irish life for people my age. The way we interact with each other, with bouncers, with Taxi Drivers. I had only see fetishised versions of youth on screen glamourised nights out and well staged sexual encounters in designers bras, that’s just not how my life was. TV is often the first experience people have of the milestones ahead of them. More and more it’s TV and not books that lay expectations for younger viewers of what they can expect. I think there’s a responsibility there for honesty.
Do you have any exciting upcoming projects you could tell us about?
A new show I’m writing for a company in New York is exciting me right now. Also, I’ve written a film with support from the Irish film board and it’s the film I wish I had seen when I was 17 – so I have great hopes for that.
What has been your biggest success and challenge in life so far?
Keeping myself somewhat mentally healthy while living in a world that is steeped in a culture of ‘not enough’, where people compare themselves to photoshopped strangers on Instagram and where there is always a new ‘improvement’ you could be making. For both.
At Theo + George we believe in buying less and choosing well. Our style is minimalist and effortless. How would you describe your style?
My style is terrible. I’m always in pyjamas or sportswear. Whenever those things aren’t appropriate I call on stylist Sinead Keary who tells me what to wear and more importantly how to wear it. Now I’m getting braver and I can wear jeans and a bomber often but I’m so scared of getting it wrong that I ’m sometimes afraid to try.
Tell me something that not many people know about you?
I’m shy. Like, stuttering, shallow breathing, I-don’t-know-how-to-respond shy. When people meet me in public they think I’m as confident as I come across in interviews but I do a ton of training with my media coach Lorcan Nyhan before any interview. In real life, I just turn concave and stutter at people.
We at Theo + George believe in effortless ease through a balanced lifestyle. How do you relax after a day of work?
I don’t relax after work. In society now we use “busy” as a badge of honour. It seems working yourself into the ground makes you more virtuous and objectively better than someone who is balanced. I don’t agree with or approve of that kind of culture. I relax throughout the day. I get 8 hours sleep. I take breaks. I eat well. I see people I love. I walk. And I say NO to people who try to push their unbalanced schedule into my routine. In saying that- I have never missed a deadline. Self-care is not an excuse for unreliability.
Where do you find your inspiration?
From listening. If you don’t talk too much and just listen people gift you with golden nuggets of insights into their lives. I’m a demon for detail when it comes to people and the psychology behind their behaviour. But I’m not observant of bigger things at all. My best friend Cathal will be walking to town with me and I’ll hear a snippet of a passing conversation and then he’ll say- OMG did you see that bus that was on fire back there. And I won’t have. I live in my head a lot.
You always seem to be on the go. Constantly working on new exciting projects. Which is great it’s very empowering to see other women, especially in Ireland really making a difference and using their platform to be vocal on what matters. Have you got any advice to give to people on pursuing their career?
Early is on time. On time is late. Late is unacceptable. And get a mentor.
You can catch Season Two of 'Can't Cope, Won't Cope’ on RTE2 every Monday from 9.30pm
.
My full name is Josephine Ann Elle Linehan, and I’m originally from Mallow, Co Cork, though I’ve called Dublin my home for the last seven years! I would describe myself as positive, passionate and a control freak.
2. I read in an interview recently about how you were very determined to make your way into the fashion industry. Can you tell us a bit about that?
I grew up in a small town with absolutely no connection to the fashion industry (unless you count a stack of UK and US VOGUE’s?), so I knew that if I wanted to work in fashion Magazines it was going to be difficult. I worked different jobs in Dublin - nannying, in retail, music lessons - whatever it took to pay rent while I cold called and emailed all of the editors. I’m sure they were sick of me plaguing them, especially when I had no formal experience or qualifications in journalism. But I kept trying, I knew that if I could just get my foot in the door I would work my arse off to prove I was invaluable. Eventually, I got a call to come into IMAGE Magazine right before Christmas to make tea and hand out post. Four years later I was acting fashion editor, junior editor and was building the company’s social media from the ground up, interviewing designers and helping formulate the look and feel of the magazine. It was a dream come true and I credit the team at IMAGE for giving me the skills and tools I use every day in my career.
3. You’ve worked on so many shoots what has been your all-time favourite? Why?
Shoots are absolute magic, always. There are so many so can I cheat and say two? One was during my time in New York, I styled a shoot for Barney’s department store in a bar called Mother Of Pearl on the Lower East Side - that was a total “pinch me!” moment. My other favourite is a shoot I styled with a good friend of mine, Simon Walsh. I wanted to create a love letter to my neighbourhood, Phibsborough, so we took to the streets and shot all day in the launderette, the old furniture shop, the grocery stores, the chipper... it was grimy and fabulous and I think we captured Phibs really well.
4. I saw your piece with Irish Tatler and Courtney Smiths studio tour which I both loved! Tell me a bit about Gaff Interiors. How did Gaff interiors come about? What has been your favourite article to write about?
GAFF has been the most amazing thing for us (me and my business partner, pal and powerhouse Caroline Foran). We had always wanted to start something together and, as jobbing freelancers, we recognised a real gap in the market for an online space dedicated to affordable interiors. It began to grow faster than we could ever have imagined and we are nourishing and growing GAFF every day in a way that we feel is honest, true to us and our reader, responsible and inspiring. Having total creative control is the most satisfying feeling in the world. The site is our baby, and like all babies, we have our challenges but every day is exciting and the opportunities are endless. Can you tell I’m a little excited about it?!
5. Tell me something that not many people know about you?
I’m a trained musician! I play the drums, I sing, I play a little piano. I spent my teenage years playing in metal and punk rock bands. Music is one of the most important things in my life. It feeds me.
6. What can you not live without?
Coffee! I mean, I’m sure I could ... but why would anyone want to??
7. Who would you love to work with?
There are so many... I don’t know what we would work on but RAF Simons is my favourite designer.. so if we could work together on making an outfit for me that would be amazing! With GAFF we are itching to collaborate on our own line with West Elm....
8. Where is your favourite place to travel to?
I love hotels and I’m lucky that I get to stay in plenty (I write travel for the Irish Times Weekend Magazine), so I’m happy with a staycation in a cool hotel here in Dublin and Ireland. This year I’m hoping to visit my uncle in Fiji and Texas is top of my travel wish list. I think BBQ, horses and some good southern music is kind of my happy place.
9. Do you have any beauty tips?
I would say that there is beauty in the weird and imperfect, so try to see the parts of yourself that don’t necessarily please you in a new light. I always felt so self-conscious of my ears - they’re not small (thanks for that Dad), but after spending my teens trying to hide them I realised that they are what allow me to hear the world and listen to music. So I got my lobes tattooed with little hearts on them. Now they’re one of my favourite features.
10. Whats your guilty pleasure?
There are so, so many! I’m obsessed with the Kardashians, and you’ll always spot a Justin Bieber track in my Spotify playlist. Guilty! Don’t care!
11. If you could invite any three people in the world to a dinner party who would they be?
My friends, my family, my boyfriend. That’s a pathetic answer, I know, but they’re who I want to eat with, not someone famous who I’m afraid to chew in front of!
12. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Dublin. Tried NYC, it wasn’t for me. And if NYC doesn’t sway you, nowhere else will. Dublin is amazing in so many ways.
13. Night in or Night out?
I’ve had a particularly crazy week so I’m dying for a night in right now, but come back to me next week and we’ll hit The George.
14. This is probably a hard one Dublin or Cork?
Do you want me to be murdered?! Pass!
15. Whats your favourite type of food?
All food. I love to eat. Japanese food is always amazing, I love Thai.Sprout make my favourite salads, I love a good brunch dish...I’m a terrible cook though so peanut butter with a spoon is a regular occurrence at home...
16. What do you do in your spare time?
I love to work out so you’ll find me at a Flyefit running and sweating pretty much every other day.
17. What would your dream house be like?
I would love a modern, open plan gaff with heated floors and enough space for a dog or two. Super minimal too - I’m a “less is more” kinda gal.
18. What trend will you never get tired of?
Any new trend is my favourite. I’ll try anything once. I’m a sucker for anything that captures the zeitgeist.
19. Where would you like to see yourself in ten years?
I would love to be living in my own place in Dublin with my partner and my dog and maybe a mini-me (!!), I want GAFF HQ to be filled with a passionate workforce, in our own office space in the city, I want to have a couple more businesses on the go then too. Mostly I want to be happy and healthy and relaxed and content. And comfortable in my own skin, caring less about what others think of me and instead loving my best, most beautiful life.
20. One thing people would be surprised to learn about you?
I have a weird thing about cutlery. If I don’t like the look of it it can put me off my dinner. So much so that I brought my own cutlery on my J1. That got me some funny looks!
21. Have you got any advice to give to people on pursuing their career?
Yes! Forget about everyone’s eye rolls and opinions - your gut will always steer you right. Everyone thought I was a loon to move to Dublin. Then everyone told me to leave IMAGE and move to NY. Then we were told GAFF was never going to take off. If you let others limited beliefs affect you you’ll never be happy. Failing is the best way to learn. It hurts like a mother fucker but growth is always painful. Your higher power is always looking after you so work hard and trust that everything is working out the way it should. Be kind to everyone you meet in your work - having a good reputation is better than any qualification in my opinion.

For people who have yet to purchase ‘The Happy Closet’ can you tell readers a bit about the book and how it can help improve peoples lives?
The Happy Closet provides the psychological tools for recognising and releasing unconscious patterns behind poor shopping decisions so you can go from collecting to curating a wardrobe that works for the person you are today. It also offers practical guidance to help you transform your wardrobe (and your mind) into an organised and clutter-free space. Learn how to confront your inner hoarder, shop more mindfully, declutter like a ninja, and, most importantly, dress the person you are – today.
What are the three essential tips you would give to someone trying to declutter their wardrobe?
The tips provided in the book are psychological and practical as one informs the other. These are three of the more basic but fundamental tips to kick-start your decluttering mission:
For someone who is thinking of creating a capsule wardrobe, what questions should they ask themselves before they make the move?
There are a few ground rules that apply to buying key pieces across the board. The most important thing is to decide what pieces give you the most value as these will determine the look and feel of your capsule. Don’t fall foul of prescriptive ‘must have’ lists. Lists are merely curated lifestyle suggestions based on somebody else's notion of what constitutes 'need'. If in doubt use the points below as a starting point:
What are your staple go to’s in your closet?
Blazers and coats for sure. I think tailoring is key to looking sharp. I’m also fond of a polo neck or three.
Do you think that some trends should be kept in your closet for when they come back into fashion?
Trends that stand the test of time tend to reflect a prevailing mood or attitude – the zeitgeist if you will. The predominance of ‘athleisure’ for example reflects the need for comfortable clothing for fast-paced lifestyles. Much like capsule basics, it’s up to you to decide what works for you. Don’t be trapped into thinking you need to tap into a trend because of its popularity. If in doubt, imagine swapping clothes with the model in that fancy double-page glossy magazine spread and walking down your local high street, country lane, city block (delete as appropriate). How would it fly? Then imagine taking one stand-out element from the look and adding it to a basic jeans and t-shirt combo. A trend is only relevant if it can be incorporated into your closet collateral. That’s the difference between fashion victor and fashion victim.
Do you prefer retail or online shopping?
I like a mix of both. I prefer retail for trying on big-ticket items or where fit is an issue (jeans and boots, especially) and online for vintage pieces or brands that I’ve purchased from in the past where sizing is clear and quality is a given to minimise returns.
With Christmas shopping underway what would be your advice for people trying to break the habit of impulse buying and buying too much?
It sounds so simple but it is crucial to create a list. Think about it: you wouldn’t go to the supermarket without one; why should clothes shopping be any different? Once you’ve identified what you need; it’s a question of whittling down that list to five items. Why? It’s argued that the brain can only process an average of seven pieces of information at a time, give or take two, which would explain why we always forget something off of our shopping lists. Once you’ve prioritised five items, then commit to mono-tasking – shopping for one item at a time. By focusing on only one item, you’ll give your decision muscles a long lunch break and, as a result, manage to find what you need rather than floating aimlessly with a half-baked idea of what you might want. If this all sounds too draconian, keep a tab of non-essential items that pique your interest and allow yourself one treat off the list upon successful completion of your Christmas shopping essentials.
How did you develop the Nine Closet Types?
The 9 closet types were developed over a period of time where I was decluttering closets and noticed overarching patterns (emotional hang-ups and shopping habits) that kept people locked into a cycle of having a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.
Nine Closet Types I found to be very funny this was carried out throughout the book. Did you find this difficult to keep in the book?
Thank you. I think it’s important to have an inclusive tone which takes the reader on a journey. For me, it reflects my intention - to take the stress out of getting dressed.
You’re relaunching your website within the next two weeks. Can you tell me a bit about the relaunch and what new things are going to be shown on your website?
The website will feature a blog that incorporates mindful dressing and living – key elements from my books The Happy Closet and The Happy Medium. There will also be a special section on What’s in My Wardrobe which showcases the many ways I wear and re-wear closet staples and special pieces.
Annmarie's book is available in all good bookstores and on Amazon.
I think we can all agree that there is no style that is really and truly “timeless”. After all, the textile technology industry has changed so rapidly over the past century that we really don’t have an accurate way to benchmark what makes something literally timeless. So where does that leave us today? Does timeless refer to a style that stays in fashion for 10, 30, or 50 years? Will a timeless piece NEVER look dated? Are timeless items tied to a distinctive style (i.e. New England prep)?
In general, we feel that timeless can be broken down into several basic indicators that indicate whether or not a garment will be more likely to be wearable over time. However, we do feel that personal style and attraction plays a huge part in identifying what is timeless for YOU.
1. Iconicity:
2. Simplicity and clean cuts:
This guideline is pretty straight-forward. The fewer embellishments and “trendy” cuts (or rips, for that matter), the longer the garment is likely to stay in style. The importance of this rule can also be applied to seemingly iconic items. For example, It’s safe to say that “clear knee mom jeans” don’t fall into the category of iconic denim. And the recent “cold shoulder” trend would instantly date even a white t-shirt.
3. Uniqueness:
Fun and unique garments can be a great way to avoid trends while adding some personality to your wardrobe. If few people own the item, it is less likely to be considered fast-fashion or to go out of “style”.
The bottom line: We believe that timeless garments are those that fit your personal style, that makes you happy, that you FEEL GOOD in, that allows you to move, that are high quality, and that you will eventually be forced to part with once they have been worn to the brink rather than because they have become embarrassingly unfashionable.
And finally - we’ll leave you with this genius clip from Lacoste.
Do’s
1. Do wait for Cyber Monday!
If your busy at work and can’t make the Black Friday sales or you just dread the thought of shopping. Why not wait until Monday for online sales. Less stress while shopping in your own comforts. Head over to the Theo + George page for our 3 for 2 offer and free global shipping.
2. Pick Quality over Quantity.
We understand that you can get distracted by offers resulting in having unnecessary items in your shopping basket. Stay focused choosing a few items of clothing that are of high-quality rather than many items that you may never wear. If you are really bad when it comes to having a capsule collection we suggest reading Ann Marie O’Connor’s book “The Happy Closet”. This book guides and teaches you on how to create a minimalistic wardrobe. Helping you save money and time!
3. Start Christmas Shopping
Yes, you heard right! Start Christmas shopping. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the perfect time for gift shopping. Getting great deals + Saving money = The best gift!
4. Always start early!
